Miha Šimac, Jure Sovinc ------------------------------------------------- I TRUST IN THE LORD As was custom at the time, the newborn Anton Vovk was brought to the local parish church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Breznica to be baptized by the parish priest, Tomaž Potočnik (1855–1910), on the very day he was born, 19 May 1900. His godparents were Janez Ažman, a smallholder, and Neža Mežnarec, a landholder’s wife. Later, he also received his first Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation at the same parish church. It was probably the spiritual shepherds who served in Breznica, as well as his family members who influenced Vovk, igniting in his heart the love for God and trust in Him as well as the desire to become His servant. In 1919, when he was finishing high school, he wrote down some thoughts on his profession: ‘Whither, young man, with such stride, with a joy in your eyes you cannot hide?’ People now ask who come my way, but the heart tells the tongue not to say! I seek not advice, my beloved, from you, your words will not my mind bestrew, as there is a stronger voice in my heart, that gives me strength right from the start: ‘Follow the calling from God, and grace, homeland and happiness will ensue in every place!’ Anton Vovk had therefore decided to become a priest. He entered the Seminary in Ljubljana and celebrated his first Mass in this church on 8 July 1923. He cared deeply about his home parish throughout his life, evident among other things from the baptistry inside the parish church, which was designed by the architect Jože Plečnik (1872–1957) and built with donations from Bishop Anton Vovk.
